Two authors that have never let me down are Thomas Hardy and John Steinbeck.brbrMy favorite Hardy book is The Mayor of Casterbridge which begins with one of the most shocking chapters ever to start a book... and it just gets more intense. The lead character commits an atrocity, becomes the mayor of Casterbridge years later, and then his past comes back to haunt him... big time.brbrEast of Eden by Steinbeck is monumental, sprawling, and just plain big. I read it once every years. It concerns the histories of the Trask and Hamilton families, and its the most autobiograpical of Steinbecks works. The James Dean movie just takes into account the last pages of the novel.
